This is an 8x10 Giclee of the original painting of the endangered Western Snowy Plover in acrylic on a map of US west coast of Oregon and Washington Coasts where it resides. It is the third painting of a series of endangered and threatened animals painted over the map of their endemic region. By using acrylic paints and medium, I am able to create transparent and opaque effects to reveal portions of map throughout the painting. Preserving the image of the endangered animal in my artwork allows me to keep it in view for others, as the threat to their existence may one day render them unknowable.
The Pacific Coast Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) are officially considered threatened by the US Federal government. The rate of reproduction has declined 45-60 percent, due to human disturbance, predation, weather and loss of nesting habitat, beachgrass and urban development. Human activities, such as walking, jogging, running pets, horseback riding, and vehicle use peak in the months coincide with its breeding season. A recovery plan has been in place since 2007.
The work is painted onto paper and mounted to a canvas board.
