This is an 8x10 inch Giclee of the original painting of the endangered Green Parrot of Puerto Rico in acrylic on a map of the Caribbean Islands where it resides. It is the sixth painting of a series of endangered and threatened animals painted over the map of their endemic region. By using acrylic paints and medium, I am able to create transparent and opaque effects to reveal portions of map throughout the painting. Preserving the image of the endangered animal in my artwork allows me to keep it in view for others, as the threat to their existence may one day render them unknowable.
The critically endangered Puerto Rican Amazon (Amazona Vittata) is the only parrot endemic to the United States in Puerto Rico. Once populous, loss of habitat caused a near extinction when in 2012 there were only 58-80 in the wild and 300 in captivity. Recent events with Hurricane Irma have further exacerbate the efforts to conserve their habitats and food supply. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/10/hurricane-irma-harvey-maria-bird-impacts-caribbean/
The artwork is painted on map paper and mounted on canvas board.
